Beginning his career in Kalabhavan as a mimicry artist, he and his boyhood buddy Siddique would go on to form the successful filmmaking duo Siddique-Lal, starring in a wide variety of roles. In their first film, Nokkethadhoorathu Kannum Nattu, Lal and Siddique worked as assistant directors under Fazil.

A Siddique-Lal production had never relied on the star power or superstar formula common in 1970s Malayalam films. Neither Mohanlal nor Mammootty had ever been considered for a role. When it came time to release their fourth production feature, Vietnam Colony (1992), both Siddique and Mohanlal had changed their minds and decided to work together. The film was a huge success at the box office. Kabooliwala (1994), their fifth production together, was also a hit.

As a result, Lal switched to producing with Siddique’s Hitler starring Mammootty and marked the end of their collaboration as directors. Lal made his acting debut in Jayaraj’s Kaliyattam, starring Suresh Gopi, playing the villain Paniyan. In the modern adaptation of Othello known as Kaliyattam, Lal portrayed Iago, or Paniyan. In Kochi, India, he operates a post-production studio called Lal Media Arts. His directorial comeback was in 2009. He oversaw the production of 2 Harihar Nagar, the follow-up to the successful In Harihar Nagar. He received a National Film Award citation for his work in the 2012 film Ozhimuri. In Thalappavu (2008), Ayaal (2013), and Zachariayude Garbhinikal (2015), he won two state cinema awards for Best Actor (2013).

Lal, who also features prominently in Karthi’s Sulthan (2021), has praised Mari Selvaraj’s work on Karnan and has a significant role in the film (2021). Despite being cast as the most one-dimensional character in Taanakkaran (2022), the actor takes the job with ease and probably has more of an impact here than in his prior role.
