Madhur Bhandarkar Early Life

Bhandarkar was born into a privileged family of Konkani speakers. He never finished high school. Due to his family’s wealth, he was able to try out a number of different professions. As a “run boy,” his job at a video cassette library had him delivering cassettes to all sorts of individuals, from dance bar ladies to movie stars. He made $1,000 per year as an assistant to low-budget film directors and the equivalent selling gum. Similarly, he went to Muscat, Oman, in search of employment. He has been making the trek from his Khar, Mumbai home to the shrine of the Hindu God Siddhivinayak every single Tuesday for the past 16 years. His most challenging picture, “Corporate,” was inspired by the rivalry between Coke and Pepsi. Since the publication of “Corporate,” he has been asked to speak to groups of management students on various topics related to corporations.

On December 15, 2003, in Mumbai, Bhandarkar wed his girlfriend, Renu Namboodiri, and the couple welcomed a daughter they named Siddhi.

Madhur Bhandarkar Career

In the 1995 film “Rangeela,” he made his directorial debut as Ram Gopal Varma’s assistant. A few years later, in 1999, he made his directorial debut with the film “Trishakti,” which had been in the works for more than three years. The film’s low-key cast contributed to its lacklustre performance at the box office. In 2001, he directed the critically panned and commercially successful film “Chandni Bar.” This catapulted Bhandarkar into the elite group of Bollywood directors. He went on to win further National Awards with his subsequent flicks, Page-3 and Traffic Signal. In addition to Priyanka Chopra taking home the award for Best Actress at the 2008 National Film Awards for her work in his film “Fashion,” she also took home the award for Best Supporting Actress (Kangana Ranaut).

In the first decade of the 21st century, he was deemed “The Film Maker.” Moreover, in November 2010, the National Film Archive of India (NFAI) made the decision to archive all of Madhur Bhandarkar’s works. The Government Archive contains information about Indian movies like Chandni Bar, Page-3, Corporate, Traffic Signal, Fashion, and Jail. Bhandarkar often has strong female leads in his films. Madhur’s films often reflected the harsh realities of life.

He has represented India at international film festivals, won various honours, and been nominated for membership in the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute. Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji (2011), Heroine (2012), and Calendar Girls (2015) are some of his more recent works.
