Both the romantic drama Geethanjali (directed by Maniratnam) and the action movie Shiva (directed by Ram Gopal Varma) in which he starred were commercial successes, establishing him as one of the finest protagonists in Indian film. He was at a phase in his career where he wanted to work with new directors like Ram Gopal Varma so that he could refresh his on-screen persona and draw inspiration from their fresh ideas.
His first film role was in the Hindi dub of Shiva. His stardom was cemented by the commercial and critical success of movies like President Gari Pellam and Hello Brother. Ninne Pelladutha, written by Krishna Vamsi, was therefore well-received by viewers of all ages. The picture was a huge success at the box office. The picture was so popular that it played for 100 days at 42 different theatres.

His film Sri Ramadasu was a commercial success and won him the Nandi Award, but his next film, Boss, I Love You, was panned by critics and failed to make money.
