In Pilani, Rajasthan, Nimrat Kaur was born into a Sikh household. She has a younger sister named Rubina who works as a psychologist in Bangalore. Her father, Major Bhupinder Singh, SC, was an officer in the Indian Army. She attended Yadavindra Public School in Patiala and her family called Patiala home. Her father was kidnapped and murdered by Kashmiri terrorists in 1994. After that, her family relocated to the Noida neighborhood of Delhi, where she later grew up and attended Delhi Public School. Later, she pursued studies at Delhi University’s Shri Ram College of Commerce, where she earned a B.Com. with honors in business.

One Night with the King (2006), an English movie shot in Rajasthan, gave Nimrat Kaur her first acting role. Her first Hindi film, Peddlers (2012), was made by Anurag Kashyap. The movie received positive reviews when it was shown at Cannes.  Kaur gained popularity after she made an appearance in a Cadbury Silk advertisement. Kaur participated in the Cannes Film Festival for the second time in support of the romantic comedy The Lunchbox (2013).  Both critically and commercially, the movie was a hit. Kaur’s portrayal of a lonely wife who strikes up a correspondence with a man (played by Irrfan Khan) gained acclaim.  “It is a disarmingly natural performance that is impossible to forget and difficult to analyze, and in this constrained space one may just express adoration,” Raja Sen of Rediff.com remarked of Kaur’s performance.  Variety’s Jay Weissberg referred to her as a “Nimrat “strips off all the emotion to attach dignity and grace to the character,” according to Pratim D. Gupta of The Telegraph. This one makes a fantastic debut.”  Kaur had an appearance as ISI agent Tasneem Qureishi in Homeland’s fourth season in 2014.  In the same year, she committed to appearing alongside Rajkummar Rao in an unnamed psychological drama that Saurabh Shukla would direct.  She co-starred with Akshay Kumar in the war drama Airlift in 2016.

The film, which is based on the civil evacuation of Indians stationed in Kuwait during the Iraq-Kuwait war, was released on January 22 to mostly favorable reviews. Rajeev Masand stated in his review: “The movie feels most real, and Nimrat Kaur fits in perfectly. She is a little clumsy in the early moments, but she really comes into her own when she is forced to give a harsh monologue during a crisis of faith due to her husband’s behavior.”  The movie was a financial hit. 2016 saw Kaur start as Rebecca Yedlin in the second season of the American drama Wayward Pines. 
Kaur played Captain Shikha Sharma in the Hindi-language online series The Test Case in 2017. In February 2020, she returned as a series regular for Homeland’s eighth and final season.

Her most recent endeavor was the Netflix hit Dasvi, starring Yami Gautam and Abhishek Bachchan. earning acclaim for her portrayal as the shy wife of the CM, who becomes the CM after her husband is imprisoned for fraud.
