He was the youngest of six children, all born to Shyamanna and D. Rajammal, who raised them in an orthodox household with the name Ravichandran.
In 1986, he wed Vishnupriya, and the couple eventually welcomed a son, Rahul Ravi, in 1988. In May of 2017, his son Rahul Ravi wed Muthupriya.

Nizhalgal Actor Ravi got his start in the South Indian cinema industry in the Tamil film Nizhalgal, directed by industry veteran Bharathiraja, from whom he also got his name. He was the romantic lead, a would-be hero. Films like Vedam Puthithu, Nayakan, Chinna Thambi Periya Thambi, Annamalai, Marupadiyam, and Aasai include him in supporting roles. He played many different characters, from caring dads to brutal bad guys to treacherous double agents. The Tamil version of Kaun Banega Crorepati included his voice impersonating that of Amitabh Bachchan. Over the course of the ’80s, he appeared in over 25 Malayalam films. Arts, in Coimbatore, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Economics. He acted in director K. Balachander’s telefilm Rayil Sneham, which became a hit in the late 80s and early 90s.
