She attended La Martiniere Girls School and St. Maria Goretti College in Lucknow, as well as Newton North High School and John F. Kennedy High School in Newton, Massachusetts and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, respectively, and Army School in Bareilly, India. She competed in the Femina Miss India pageant in 2000 and placed second. She was named Miss World 2000 the same year. After she won, she was inundated with offers from Hollywood studios.
In 2002, she made her acting debut in the major role of Priya in the Tamil film Thamizhan. The song “Ullathai Killathe” from the film was sung by her as well. A lot of people saw it in theatres, thus the picture did well financially. She made her Bollywood debut with 2003’s The Hero: Love Story of a Spy, in which she played the major character of Dr. Shaheen Zakaria.
