Maveric filmmakers Maniratnam’s dream project Ponniyin Selvan’s first part was released on September 30, 2022, across the languages. PS 1 ended with a cliffhanger where Jayam Ravi’s character Arulmozhi Varman and Karthi’s character Vandhiyathevan has drowning in the sea after a fight with Pandiyas. In the end credits of the first movie, Oomai Rani’s face was also shown, which confused fans because Aishwarya Rai also plays the character.
