R. Rathnavelu Education
Rathnavelu holds a Bachelor of Science in Physics from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a Diploma in Film Technology in cinematography from the M.G.R. Government Film and Television Training Institute, both in India. Soon after, he began working as an assistant to cinematographer Rajiv Menon on Mani Rathnam’s Bombay.

It was in the city of Chennai that Rathnavelu first saw the light of day. Following his graduation from the M.G.R. Government Film and Television Training Institute, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics and a Certificate in Film Technology in Cinematography in three years. Next, he worked with cinematographer Rajeev Menon on the Mani Ratnam film Bombay.
R. Rathnavelu Career
The Tamil film “Aravindhan” was his first film. He is well known for his roles in Tamil films, but he also appeared in the Hindi film David. He won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award and the Filmfare Award for Best Cinematography for his work on “Nandha.” Another Filmfare and Vijay Award for Best Cinematographer went to him in 2010 for “Enthiran.”
His most recent work in “Lingaa” has been getting a lot of attention. After finishing FTI, Rathnavelu began his career as Rajiv Menon’s assistant, during which time he worked on numerous advertisements.
