Ranjith Career

Ranjith began his acting career in 1993 with Pon Vilangu, starring with Rahman, Sivaranjani, and Ramya Krishnan after completing an acting course conducted by K. S. Rajkumar and produced by R. K. Selvamani. “Ranjith, despite his huge build, shines in his maiden performance,” wrote K. Vijayan of New Straits Times of Ranjith’s acting. He starred in the rural drama Sindhu Nathi Poo the next year.

Both Minor Mappillai and Avathara Purushan, in which he had a supporting role, were released in the same year, 1996. A financial and critical triumph in 1997, he had a cameo appearance in Cheran’s Bharathi Kannamma.  Starting off 1998, Ranjith starred opposite Mammootty in the critically acclaimed film Maru Malarchi. For his villainous turn, he was awarded the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Villain.  He then began receiving an overwhelming number of job and business proposal offers.  His 1998 career peaked with roles in the blockbuster Natpukkaga and the villainous Dharma. He had supporting roles in Desiya Geetham and Pudhumai Pithan, both released at the end of 1998, and the main role in the low-budget film Cheran Chozhan Pandian.

Except for the major roles he did in Nesam Pudhusu (1999) and Kann Thirandhu Paaramma (2000), he mainly portrayed supporting and villain roles between 1999 and 2001. For the film Bheeshmar, which he also directed and produced in 2003, Ranjith took on the role of the titular character (2003). The movie was a financial failure. Ranjith was unable to create another film of his own due to a lack of money after the first one was bombed. Ranjith afterward branched out into supporting roles in Malayalam movies.
The political satire Padhavi Paduthum Paadu and the long-delayed Aadhikkam both featured him in 2005.
