On January 26, 1968, Ravi Teja entered the world in Jaggampeta, India. Raised by his parents, Rajya Lakshmi Bhupatiraju and Raj Gopal Raju. His dad worked in pharmacology, while his mom stayed home to raise him. Three of Ravi Teja’s sons are also actors: Raghu and Bharath. The several relocations his father undertook for his business meant that Teja would spend much of his boyhood in the northern part of India. He attended schools in Jaipur, Mumbai, Delhi, and Bhopal before finishing his education. Ravi attended N.S.M. Public School in Vijayawada and graduated with honors. After that, he attended Siddhartha Degree College in Vijayawada and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts. In 1988, he moved to Chennai with the goal of beginning a filmmaking career.

YVS Chowdary and Gunasekhar were his housemates during his early years of employment in Chennai. The films Karthavyam (1990), Abhimanyu (1990), Chaitanya (1991), Collector Gaari Alludu (1992), and Aaj Ka Goonda Raj (1993) all featured him in supporting roles (1992). Teja started a career in film and television as an AD. He worked as an assistant director on a number of films, both in Bollywood and Telugu, including Prathihnbandh, Aaj Ka Goonda Raj, and Criminal.
