Salim Merchant Early Life

On Sunday, March 3, 1974 (or 45 years ago in 2019), Salim Merchant was born in Mumbai. Mundra, in the district of Kutch in the Indian state of Gujarat, is where his family originated. He’s a Pisces, according to the astrological calendar.  Since his father was a music director, Salim was exposed to music at an early age. After finishing high school, Salim enrolled at London’s Trinity College of Music to hone his piano playing skills. Following this he travelled to Delhi’s Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan to study the harmonium. Ustad Sultan Khan was his teacher.

Merchant Salim’s parents are devout Muslims. His musician father Sadruddin Merchant was a producer. His father was the former conductor of the Indian Ismaili Scouts Orchestra. Salim Merchant Career

Salim got his start in the industry writing commercial “jingles” for television. In the mid-1990s, he began producing records for pop artists like Voodoo Rapper, Style Bhai, Shweta Shetty, and Jasmine Bharucha, and he himself became a pop performer. In 1997, he and his brother were given their first Bollywood project, writing the ‘Background Score’ for the film “Hameshaa.” His subsequent score for the film “Ghaath” was also composed by him. After contributing to the score for the film “Bhoot,” the two musicians found immediate success.

Subsequently, he composed the music and background soundtracks for a number of successful Bollywood films, including “Ab Tak Chhappan” (2004), “Mujhse Shaadi Karogi” (2004), “Dhoom” (2004), “Neal ‘N’ Nikki” (2005), “Kaal” (2005), “Krrish” (2006), and “Fashion” (2008).

Salim is not just a talented composer, but also a fantastic singer who has contributed his voice to numerous hit Bollywood films and albums. His song “Ishq Wala Love,” included in the film “Student of the Year,” was a huge success in 2014. He and his brother are responsible for the Bollywood versions of “Born This Way” and “Judas” by Lady Gaga. Both the song “I’m A Freak” by Enrique and the score for the Hollywood film “Sold” feature their collaboration. He has served as a judge on “Indian Idol” for both Season 5 and Season 6. Salim has served as a judge for both seasons 2 and 2 of The Voice of India and Indian Idol Junior.
