He was born to film producer Navin Bhansali and seamstress Leela Bhansali, placing him firmly in the Gujarati Kshatriya (Solanki) caste. His sister’s name is Bela Segal.

He was once engaged to the choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant, but the two eventually broke up.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali Career

Sanjay began his career as an assistant director after finishing his education. He worked with filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra on the films Parinda and 1942: A Love Story. His first film, Khamoshi: The Musical (1996), which he wrote and directed, did not do well financially but was praised for its content. His 1999 film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, his second as a director, was shown in the Indian Panorama section of the International Film Festival of India, where it received widespread acclaim. Devdas (2002), his third picture as a filmmaker, premiered at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival and is India’s submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards. In 2005, his picture Black won an unprecedented eleven Filmfare awards.

He served as a judge on the dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Season1 in 2006 alongside Shilpa Shetty and Farah Khan, and on the music talent show X Factor India in 2011 alongside Shreya Ghoshal and Sonu Nigam.

He oversaw the production of Padmavati, an opera, in 2008. The premieres of the piece took place at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris and the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto, Italy, respectively, and were met with fifteen minutes of standing ovation and seven curtain calls. He did it all for the 2010 picture Guzaarish: he wrote, directed, produced, and even scored it. His film Mary Kom (2014) made history as the first Hindi film ever shown during the opening night of the Toronto International Film Festival.

In 2013, he created the well-received Hindi TV serial Saraswatichandra, however he quit the project after only a few episodes. His movie Bajirao Mastani (2015), which was released in theatres in 2015, ended up becoming one of the highest-grossing Indian films of all time and was featured at the 2016 International Film Festival of India’s Indian Panorama section. His first film, Laal Ishq, a Marathi film, was released in 2016.
