The Chembur suburb of Mumbai is where Shankar Mahadevan was born on 3 March 1967 (he is 52 years old as of 2019).  Shankar began playing the Veena and harmonium at the young age of five. He studied under Pandit Shrinivas Khale, a master of Hindustani Classical music. In addition, TR Balamani has taught him Carnatic classical music.

Shankar Mahadevan is a member of the illustrious Tamil Iyer family of Palakkad, Kerala. The younger sister of Shankar Mahadevan is named Deepika Shringarpure. Sangeeta Shankar Mahadevan is Shankar’s wife. They have two musically talented sons: Siddharth Mahadevan (born April 16, 1993) is a singer and composer, and Shivam Shankar Mahadevan was born in 2001 (both are singers).

Shankar was a software programmer for Oracle Corporation before he began his career in music. In the beginning of his career, Shankar sang jingles for commercials. In the 1994 film Humse Hai Muqabala (a Hindi remake of the Tamil film Kadhalan), Shankar Mahadevan debuted as a singer with the songs “Petta Rap” and “Urvasi Urvasi.”

“Tum Nahi Jaana,” from the film Duplicate, was the first Bollywood song he ever sang (1998). The songs “Chamma Chamma,” “Bhumbro Bhumbro,” “Ghanan Ghanan,” “Maahi Ve,” “Kajra Re,” “Mitwa,” and “Sau Aasoon” are only a few of his many successes. Popularity grew for Shankar after the publication of his debut album “Breathless” in 1998. Javed Akhtar is responsible for the album’s music. In the film V. I. P. (1997), he debuted with the song “Netru No No.”

In 1998, with the release of the film “Antahpuram,” which featured the song “Shivamethara Sambayya,” he made his Telugu debut. In the film Janumadatha (1999), Shankar sang the song “Dennana Dennanaa,” marking his first foray into the Kannada language. In the movie “Dreamz” (2000), he sang the song “Pakkala Paadan Vaa,” marking the beginning of his Malayalam career. Shankar first sang in Marathi for the film Aga Bai Arrecha! (2004), with the song “Mann Udhaan Varyache.” Additionally, he has sung songs in the Tulu language, including the debut of “Jai Tulunadu” from the film Rickshaw Driver (2014).

His debut film score was for “Rockford (1999)” as a member of the musical trio “Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy.” Mission Kashmir (2000), Dil Chahta Ha (2001), Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006), Taare Zameen Par (2007), My Name Is Khan (2010), and 2 States (2014) are just a few of the films he composed music for.
