He was born to Manjunatha Rao and Anusuya. He was the second son to his parents, his older brother being Sudheendra Rao. Rao’s family was poor. As a baby, he suffered from an eye problem, the result of which could be seen in his ability to roll his eyeballs, which were seen in sequences of many of his movies.
He obtained his Bachelor of Commerce degree from APS College of Commerce, Bangalore. During his time at the college, he participated in plays often forming troupes with his friends. His association with actor and director Kashinath, who happened to be a distant relative of his, began during his final year in college and would play an important role in his film career.
