In 1982, Vijay had a little part alongside his uncle Rajkumar, aunt Ambika, and cousin Puneeth Rajkumar (billed as Master Lohith) in Singeetham Srinivasa Rao’s romance play Chalisuva Modagalu. His next film appearance was in a song with his cousin Puneeth Rajkumar in the 1989 film Parashuram. After a while, in 1991, he showed up in Chi’s version of the Hindi film Jawani Diwani (1971), titled Aralida Hoovugalu. Dattaraj, with Shiva Rajkumar in a supporting role. After the success of his second film, Chinnari Mutha, he was recognised by everyone in Karnataka. After that, he went on to star in a slew of films, including the National Award–winning Kotreshi Kanasu.

A young actor at the time, Vijay had roles in three films that year: H. After starring in the novel-based drama Jaga Mechida Huduga by R. Bhargava and the devotional film Kollura Sri Mookambika by Renuka Sharma (in which he played the youthful Shankaracharya), he went on to star as the main character in the T. Chinnari Mutha, a film for kids directed by S. Nagabharana. After its initial release, the picture received a slew of accolades on both the regional and national levels. Vijay’s performance as an innocent Mutha who gains fame by his good deeds earned him the Karnataka State Film Award for Best Child Actor (Male). The 1995 film Kotreshi Kanasu, directed by Nagathihalli Chandrashekar and based on the novel Kotra Highschoolige Seriddu, also increased his reputation. In 1994–1995, Vijay won the National Film Award for Best Child Artist for his performance as Kotreshi. His other film appearance was in Chindodi Bangaresh’s biopic Sangeetha Sagara Ganayogi Panchakshara Gavai. In the Hindi film Swami Vivekananda, he reprised his role as the youthful and blind reformer Gawai and also played the younger version of Narendra. In the wake of this, he stopped watching movies and instead focused on school.

He made his acting debut in the 2002 hit Ninagagi, in which he starred alongside the unknown Radhika. The film, which was a remake of the Telugu smash Nuvve Kavali, broke the record for the longest run in a theatre with over 100 showings. The next year, though, he signed two more pictures that both bombed at the box office despite his first triumph. Since then, he has acted in a wide variety of films. Kallarali Hoovagi, Rishi, Khushi, and Kaaranji are just a few of his acclaimed films.

In 2010, Vijay did not have a single movie come out. The critically acclaimed Shraavana and Vinayaka Geleyara Balaga were both released in 2011, as was the ensemble feature Kalla Malla Sulla. In 2012, he appeared in the comedy Snehitaru, which featured multiple other actors and was met with mixed reviews from audiences. Winner of the Karnataka State Film Award for Best Actor in 2015 for his performance in the biopic Shivayogi Sri Puttayyajja.

There were originally 13 competitors in the first season of the Kannada version of Bigg Boss in 2013, and Vijay ended up winning the competition. According to reports, Vijay has received Rs. 5 million in prize money.
