Originally from Bangalore, India, Vijay Raghavendra was born into a famous film family. He got his start appearing alongside his uncle Rajkumar in movies. Vijay received his official instruction in acting at Chennai after appearing in around eight films as a bad actor.

In 1982, Vijay had a little part alongside his uncle Rajkumar, aunt Ambika, and cousin Puneeth Rajkumar (billed as Master Lohith) in Singeetham Srinivasa Rao’s romance play Chalisuva Modagalu. His next film appearance was in a song with his cousin Puneeth Rajkumar in the 1989 film Parashuram. After a while, in 1991, he showed up in Chi’s version of the Hindi film Jawani Diwani (1971), titled Aralida Hoovugalu. Dattaraj, with Shiva Rajkumar in a supporting role. After the success of his second film, Chinnari Mutha, he was recognised by everyone in Karnataka. In the Hindi film Swami Vivekananda, he reprised his role as the youthful and blind reformer Gawai and also played the younger version of Narendra. He made his acting debut in the 2002 hit Ninagagi, in which he starred alongside the unknown Radhika. The film, which was a remake of the Telugu smash Nuvve Kavali, broke the record for the longest run in a theatre with over 100 showings.
