Vijay’s aim to maintain a decent, clean image both on and off-screen is a notable feature of his profession. In Ghilli and Pokkiri, the actor rescued young women from the hands of villains, but in Thuppakki and Theri, he played an intelligence officer and cop who fought to defend the vulnerable, and his roles in both films were huge hits. In both Mersal and Kaththi, his mission was to rescue victims from the hands of evil corporations.
Vijay seems to be following in the footsteps of M.G. Ramachandran (MGR), the actor and former chief minister of Tamil Nadu, by playing to the masses as a savior figure, championing the rights of women, and emphasizing the need for strong families. Whereas MGR cared deeply about the social impact of his films’ songs, Vijay’s are more upbeat and aimed at a younger audience. However, societal themes are prominent in Vijay’s films, such as the struggle against corporates, corruption, exploitation, and so on.
