It was the 1984 film Holi, directed by Ketan Mehta, that marked Ashutosh’s debut as a leading man in Hindi cinema. He later went on to star in films like Woh, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, Goonj, Chamatkar, and Bharat Ki Khoj. Lagaan, a film that became a cult classic in 2001, was directed by Ashutosh. Filmed in a Victorian era and starring Aamir Khan and Gracy Singh, this production broke box office records throughout the world. The villagers of a little village, crushed under the weight of heavy taxes, find themselves in a very unusual predicament when a vain official uses a cricket match as bait to get out of paying his fair share of the levy. One of 2001’s biggest hits, it also made Empire’s list of the 100 best films of all time at number 55. It was included in Time’s 2011 list of the 25 best sports movies of all time. Aamir Khan’s Lagaan, which he also produced, received nine Filmfare Awards and eight National Film Awards.

His next film, the drama Swades: We The People, starred Shah Rukh Khan and was not only directed by him but also written and produced by him. After gaining positive reviews from critics all over, the film was dubbed into Tamil and released with the name Desam. Jodha Akbar, a historical romantic drama starring Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, was released under his direction in 2008. His subsequent films as director and producer, including What’s Your Rashee? and Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey, were commercial flops.

Mohenjo Daro, another historical romance by Ashutosh, came out in 2016. Starring Siddharth Roy Kapur (the film’s producer) and Sunita Gowariker (the film’s director), Hrithik Roshan and Pooja Hegde (the film’s female lead). Panipat is one of his 2019 releases.
