Ilavarasu Early Life

Ilavarasu was born in Madurai’s Melur neighbourhood in 1964. He went by Ilavarasan growing up, but he became known as Ilavarasu among his movie-going pals and that stuck. In 1996, thanks to the film Panchalankurichi, which starred Prabhu and Madhubala, he became well-known as a cinematographer. A Prabhu film called Periya Thambi, directed by the now-famous producer and character artist Chithra Lakshmanan, was offered to him in 1997.

In 1998, Ilavarasu cinematographed two movies named Iniyavalae and Ninaithen Vandhai. The two films he worked on in 1999 earned him Best Cinematographer honours from the government of Tamil Nadu.

Manam Virumbudhae Unnai and Veeranadai are the two films that took home the gold. Also a cinematographer, his credits include the films Aezhayin Sirippil and Sabash. Ilavarasu has served as the cinematographer on a total of 13 films. In, a film directed by Bharathiraja, he made his acting debut. For the film, he played the role of a photographer. Having worked with stills photographer Ravi, Ilavarasu then became an assistant to B. Kannan, the acclaimed cinematographer who has shot the majority of Bharathiraja’s films. With the popularity of Cheran’s film Porkalam, in which Ilavarasu starred, he was thrust into the public eye. The initial roster of potential antagonists was larger. He minimised those villain roles and started to do the character roles.

His roles as a comic in films like Chennai 28 and Imsai Arasan 23 aam Pulikesi have made him a household name in Tamil cinema. He currently acts as the father figure to the show’s most beloved protagonists and antagonists. As an actor, Ilavarasu has also appeared in films in Malayalam, Oriya, and Kannada. He is fluent in the language and has even dubbed his own parts in Malayalam films in which he has appeared. In his acting career, Ilavarasu has appeared in a hundred films.
