He attended Andhra Education Society English High School up until class 7, but he dropped out due to his family’s financial situation. He began his career at the age of twelve. Johnny began working odd jobs like selling pens on the streets of Mumbai while dancing to Bollywood stars’ songs and impersonating them. He also spent a significant portion of his early years in Hyderabad’s Yakutpura City, where he developed his distinct comedic acting style.

In the Andhra Pradesh town of Kanigiri, Johnny Lever was born on Wednesday, August 14, 1957, under the name “John Prakash Rao Janumala.” Johnny is from a Telugu family of Christians. At the facility of Hindustan Lever Ltd. (now Hindustan Unilever), his father Prakash Rao Janumala worked as an operator. The name of his mother is Karunamma Janumala. Jimmy Moses, an actor, singer, stand-up comedian, and mime artist, is one of his two brothers and three younger sisters. In 1984, Johnny married Sujatha Lever. The couple has a daughter named Jamie Lever and a son named Jessey Lever (an actor and musician) (stand-up comedian and actress).

At Hindustan Lever Ltd., Johnny Lever held a position as an employee (now Hindustan Unilever). He began doing stand-up comedy in musical performances and other events around that period. He joined the Kalyanji-Anandji troupe after gaining notoriety. He left Hindustan Lever in 1981 since he was making a good living from theatre performances. With them, he performed in a number of concerts and international tours, one of the biggest being in 1982 with Amitabh Bachchan. He performed in 1986’s “Hope 86” charity performance in front of the Indian film industry as filler. Producer Gul Anand saw potential in him and offered him a part opposite Naseeruddin Shah in the movie Jalwa.

Yeh Rishta Na Toote (1981) was the vehicle through which he made his acting debut. Sunil Dutt saw Johnny performing on stage and offered him a role in the 1982 film “Dard Ka Rishta” after noticing him. His biggest break came when he played “Babulal” in the 1993 movie “Baazigar.” Chotta Chattri, Aslam Bhai, Hiralal, Colonel Almeida, Camp Manager, and Pappy Bhai are some of his most enduring performances. In 2011, he made his cinematic debut in Pakistan with “Love Mein Ghum.” In the 2011 Tamil movie “Anbirkku Alavillai,” he made his acting debut.
In 2014, he made his Tulu debut with the movie “Rang.”

With the movies “Pappa Tamne Nahi Samjaay” (2017) and “Gara” (2018), he made his debuts in Gujarati and Kannada, respectively. With the comedy “Zabaan Sambhalke,” Johnny made his television debut. He portrayed “Johnny Utolandand” in the show’s 29th episode. The programme ran on DD Metro from 1993 to 1998. He served as the host of the Zee TV programme “Johny Aala Re (2006)”. He starred in the 2017 Sab TV production “Partners Trouble Ho Gayi Double” as “Commissioner Gogol Chatterjee/Khabri Khogol Chatterjee/Phogol Chatterjee (triple part).”
