Kirron attended school in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh before finishing up in Chandigarh. She earned her degree in Indian theatre from Panjab University in the city of Chandigarh.

Kirron Kher Early Life

On June 14, 1952, in Bangalore, Mysore State, India, the world was introduced to Kiran Thakar Singh Sandhu. Sandhu clan of Punjabi Jatt Sikhs were born there and raised in the city of Chandigarh.  She went by the name “Kiran Berry” while she was married to Gautam Berry for the first time. She returned to her maiden name after marrying Anupam Kher, but now goes as “Kiran Thakar Singh Kher.” Later in life, she adopted a solid belief in Numerology, which led her to legally alter her name from “Kiran” to “Kirron” based on numerological calculations, drop her maiden name, and become known as “Kirron Kher.”

After making her debut in the Punjabi film Aasra Pyar Da in 1983, Kirron Kher did not return to the film industry again until 1996. [15] She only had one film appearance, Pestonjee (1987), with her second spouse Anupam Kher between 1983 and 1996.

Her theatrical comeback began in the mid-1990s with the play Saalgirah, which was written by Javed Siddiqui and directed by Feroz Abbas Khan.  She then hosted three television shows, starting with the short-lived Purushkshetra on Zee TV which got attention for bringing out the discussion of alternative sexuality for the first time, while also highlighting women’s issues.
Before acting in Hindi films, Kiron Kher appeared on Today and Jagte Raho.

Her comeback film was by Shyam Benegal, Sardari Begum (1996), which won her the Special Jury Award at the 1997 National Film Awards. She then appeared in film director Rituparno Ghosh’s Bengali film Bariwali (1999), to critical acclaim. When she won the National Film Award for Best Actress for the film, a controversy arose as a Bangla film actress, Rita Koiral, claimed that she had been dubbed for the character of Kirron, making her an equal claimant to the award. Kirron refuted the charges claiming she spent hours rehearsing for her dialogue delivery, and the award was eventually not shared.
