Nanabhai Bhatt, Mahesh Bhatt’s father, was a filmmaker and producer in India who primarily worked in Hindi and Gujarati Cinema. His dad was a Brahmin from Hindu Nagar. Mahesh’s mother, Shirin Mohammad Ali, was the second wife of Nanabhai Bhatt and a Gujarati Shia Muslim.

Nanabhai Bhatt’s first wife, Hemalata Bhatt, was his stepmother. Mukesh Bhatt (film producer; son of Nanabhai Bhatt and Shirin Mohammad Ali), Dhaval Bhatt (editor; son of Nanabhai Bhatt and Hemlata Bhatt), Robin Bhatt (writer; son of Nanabhai Bhatt and Hemlata Bhatt), Parmesh Bhatt, and four sisters, three of whom are Mamta  (daughter of Nanabhai Bhatt & Hemlata Bhatt), Sheila Darshan, Heena Suri.

Mahesh Bhatt got his start in the industry creating commercials for various products. A mutual acquaintance introduced him to the film’s director, Raj Khosla, and he soon found himself working for Khosla. The film Manzilein Aur Bhi Hain (1974) marked his first feature-length directorial effort.

His first mainstream feature, “Naam,” was released under his direction in 1984. Numerous films, including Janam (1985), Saaransh (1984), Aashiqui (1990), Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin (1991), Sir (1993), Zakhm (1998), and Sadak (2000), are his work (1991). Kartoos (1999) was his last film as director before he focused solely on writing. The film “Sadak 2” marked his return to the director’s chair (2020). Swabhimaan, shown on DD National in 1995, marked his first appearance on the small screen.

The film “Arth” (1982) marked his debut as a screenwriter. He stepped down from directing to pen the script for “Sangharsh (1999)” after a successful career. His filmography includes the Bollywood films Dushman (1998), Raaz (2002), Murder (2004), Gangster (2006), Woh Lamhe (2006), and Hamari Adhuri Kahani (2006), all of which he penned the screenplays for (2015).

In collaboration with Amit Khanna, he made his directorial debut with the 1996 film Papa Kehte Hai. He and his sibling Mukesh Bhatt operate the production company Visesh Films. Vishesh Bhatt, Mukesh’s son and a producer, inspired the company’s name.
