Anurag Basu Career
Anurag Basu is one of the most sought-after directors in Indian cinema, with films like “Life in a Metro,” “Gangster,” and “Barfi!” to his name. In his mid-20s, he made his way into the entertainment industry by directing more than 70 episodes of the TV series Tara as an assistant director. After directing the daily soap Koshish…Ek Aashaa for Balaji Telefilms in 2000, he went on to direct the pilots for other shows like Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, and Kasautii Zindagii Kay.
Basu’s first job in the film industry was directing the 2003 horror thriller Kuchh To Hai, but he quit in the middle of production and was replaced by Anil V. Kumar. Director Basu worked with Vishesh Films to produce the critically panned John Abraham and Tara Sharma film Saaya. His next directorial effort, 2004’s Murder, received widespread recognition despite its “A” rating and explicit sexual content, both of which were novel for an Indian audience at the time.
Basu’s next film, Gangster, which featured Kangana Ranaut in her first major role, was released after the success of Murder. Both the film and its soundtrack became massive successes with audiences. Barfi!, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, and Ileana D’cruz, is still one of Anurag’s best-known films. It’s about a deaf and mute child and the autistic girl he befriends. There was universal acclaim in film festivals thanks to the performances. In 2017, Basu directed the adventure musical Jagga Jasoos, which reunited him with Ranbir Kapoor and was Kapoor’s first time behind the camera as a producer.
