Mammootty was steadily advancing his profession at this time. He acted in several subsequent films as well as the 1981 film Sphodanam (directed by P. G. Viswambharan), in which his name was listed as “Sajin” in the credits. He had a leg injury while Sphodanam was being filmed. His following film, Munnettam, was a Sreekumaran Thampi production. He and Ratheesh both participated in the I.V. Sasi-directed film Thrishna that same year. Mammootty received his first significant break as a solo hero with this film. For his work in Ahimsa, he won his first state award in the Best Supporting Actor category in 1981. In the same year, he performed Aalkkoottathil Thaniye and Adiyozhukkukal.
He made his film debut in 1982 as a police officer in K. G. George’s award-winning 1982 detective thriller Yavanika, one of the best detective thrillers ever produced in Malayalam cinema. Yavanika was both a commercial and critical triumph. Padayottam and Ee Nadu were two more significant films that came out in 1982. The latter was a commercial triumph and at the time had the highest box office earnings for a South Indian film. It was Mammootty’s first film in which he portrayed a negative part, and it was the first Malayalam film with a budget over 1 crore (US$130,000). Padayottam was the first Indian film shot on a 70 mm camera that was totally processed in India. Ee Nadu was recreated with the same name in Telugu, Idhu Enga Naadu in Tamil, and Yeh Desh in Hindi in 1984. He collaborated with director P. G. Viswambharan on the 1983 film Sandhyakku Virinja Poovu, in which he portrayed a lawyer by the name of “Jayamohan.”
