Nagraj Manjule Biography

Nagraj Manjule Education

He received a master’s in communication studies from New Arts, Science and Commerce College in Ahmednagar after receiving his M.A. in Marathi literature from the University of Pune.

Nagraj Manjule Early Life

Manjule was raised in the Maharashtra village of Jeur in the Solapur district. He is a member of the Dravidian tribe known as the Waddar, which is usually nomadic. Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, the father of the Indian constitution and an emancipator of the oppressed, served as a major inspiration for Manjule. His films are heavily influenced by his own experiences as a Dalit growing up in rural Maharashtra.

Nagraj Manjule Career

His debut short film, Pistulya, which won a National Award, is a depiction of his “felt experience.” The movie is about a Dalit youngster who wants to go to school but can’t since his family is poor and his community has a pervasive dislike of formal education. In February 2014, his first full-length film, Fandry, which in the Kaikadi language means “pig,” was made available to the public.

The 66th Berlin International Film Festival had the world premiere of Manjule’s second film, Sairat. It addresses caste prejudice and honor killing, a tradition that is still common in some parts of India, like Fandry and Pistulya. The female protagonist of Sairat, Archie (Archana Patil), has won both critical and popular praise. Sairat also aims to explore the place of women in society. The all-time top-grossing Marathi movie is currently Sairat. Amitabh Bachchan’s Jhund served as Manjule’s Hindi cinema directing debut. Manjule acted as the host of Marathi Kaun Banega Crorepati in 2019.
