Sreeram attended the Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School in the Chennai neighbourhood of Mylapore and graduated from there. After that he decided to enrol in a cinematography course at the Madras Film Institute.

P.C. Sreeram Early Life

Sreeram’s birthplace is the Tamil Nadu city of Chennai. In his youth, Sreeram developed a strong interest in the film industry. He attended Vidya Mandir Senior secondary school in Mylapore for his education. Inspired by his interest in photography, he finally enrolled in a Cinematography programme at the Madras Film Institute.

P.C. Sreeram Career

P. C. Sreeram was fascinated by photography, but not with schoolwork. But despite his passion for the movies, he managed to do well on his tests and graduate. Even as a kid, he wanted to be a movie star. The Madras Film Institute awarded him a Diploma in Motion Picture Photography in 1979. In 1980, he first appeared publicly. Career-wise, he kicked off in 1981 with the film Vaa Indha Pakkam. By that time, he had spent nearly forty years in the film industry.

In 1986’s Mouna Ragam, P.C.Sreeram collaborated with Mani Ratnam for the first time. P.C. Sreeram and Director Mani Ratnam both received accolades for their work on this film. Again, they collaborated in 1987’s Nayagan. At the 35th annual National Film Awards, the film Nayagan took home three trophies. Sanmac group included P.C.Sreeram and his coworkers C.Rudhraiya, Kamal Hasan, Radharavi, Bharathi, R.C.Sakthi, and others. Until 1989’s Geetanjali, he shot all of Mani Ratnam’s films.

He was lauded for introducing innovative camerawork into his film Agni Natchathiram. His film Agni Natchathiram was critically acclaimed and a commercial success. His second film as a director, Kurthipunal, a police drama inspired by the 1995 Hindi film Drohkaal, was released in 1995. In 1996, this film was officially nominated for an Academy Award. This movie premiered at the Rotterdam Film Festival eight years after it was first released, and was screened in the “Director in Focus” section.

He directed the first Indian film to utilise high-definition digital technology, Vaanam Vasappadum, which was released in 2004. This HD digital technology creates videos with a higher standard and resolution than the regular standard, allowing for clearer viewing of movies.

He taught the likes of M.S. Prabhu, Jeeva, Ramji, K.V. Anand, Chezhiyan, Balasubramaniam, Tirru, Nirav Shah, Arvind Krishna, and K.V. Guhan, all of whom went on to become renowned cinematographers in India.
