Rajkumar Santoshi Biography
Rajkumar Santoshi Education
Rajkumar quit his high-school studies (XI std) and assisted his father in filmmaking. There isn’t much information available regarding the school from which he had completed his primary education.
Rajkumar Santoshi Early Life
Rajkumar Santhoshi was born to filmmaker P.L. Santoshi, who had given a break to actor Dev Anand, music director O.P. Nayyar and even had encouraged playback singer Kishore Kumar. In the films Sargam and Barsaat Ki Raat, directed by Raj Kapoor, his father worked as an assistant director.
When Rajkumar Santhoshi’s father remarried, he had a son named Rajkumar, and the baby was born in Chennai. His parents met and eventually wed when his father relocated to Chennai to helm Tamil films. Bigamy was commonplace at the time, therefore his father did not end his marriage to his first wife. Santhoshi grew up seeing films of M.G. Ramachandran and in Chennai (he considered his hometown then). Later on, their family moved to Mumbai and got settled there. He currently lives with his wife Manila and children; Ram and Tanisha.
Rajkumar Santoshi Career
In the wake of his father’s passing, he matured and worked with Robin Dharamraj on the film Chakra. As a result, he started out on his path to becoming a filmmaker. He worked as a producer for Vidhu Vinod Chopra before leaving to become an assistant director under Govind Nihalani.
Rajkumar’s first film, “Ghayal” (1990), for which he gained credit as both writer and director, brought him widespread acclaim. Santoshi had considered casting Sunny or Kamal Haasan in the role of Ghayal. But after meeting Sunny Deol in person, the actor Dharmendra stepped up to produce the film since Sunny liked the story. Santoshi followed the success of ‘Ghayal’ with a film starring women called ‘Damini’ (1993), which earned Sunny Deol the prize for best supporting actor at the National Film Awards. This is widely hailed as Meenakshi Seshadri’s finest film to date. The film Ghayal was adapted in Tamil, Telugu, and Oriya because it so effectively portrays a woman’s struggle for equality in a patriarchal culture. Santoshi won the Filmfare Director of the Year Award for his work on this film. Andaz Apna Apna, the 1994 film in which he cast Aamir Khan and Salman Khan, bombed at the box office. In the 1995 film “Barsaat,” he gave us our first look at Dharmendra’s other kid Booby Deol and Rajesh Khanna’s daughter Twinkle Khanna. His 1996 film “Ghatak,” which was planned to star Kamal Haasan, instead had Sunny Deol and Meenakshi Seshadri. But Sunny was in the movie until Haasan dropped out for reasons nobody knows. It was Meenakshi Seshadri’s last film, yet it was a huge success with audiences. Later on, Rajkumar collaborated with Akshaye Khanna and Jyothika as co-producer on the film “Doli Saja Ke Rakhna.” Priyadarshan directed the movie. He also worked on the unsuccessful film Jaanam Samjha Karo as a producer.
Later in his career, Rajkumar helmed nationalistic movies like ‘Pukar,’ for which Anil Kapoor won the National Film Award for best actor. The Legend of Bhagat Singh, a biopic on independence fighter Bhagat Singh, was the best film of his career, and it was released in 2002. Two National prizes were given to the film.
Rajkumar’s film starring went on to become a massive box office success, and it was directed by him. The 2013 film he directed, starring Shahid Kapoor and Ileana D’Cruz, was called “Phata Poster Nikhla Hero,” and it was met with mixed reviews.
Rajkumar is married to Manila and has two children Ram and Tanisha. He’s currently scripting a movie starring Ajay Devgan and titled “Fateh Singh.”
