In 2004, after graduating from FTII, Sriram directed the thriller film Ek Hasina Thi. Ram Gopal Varma had seen and loved his previous documentary, Raman Raghav. Sriram not only directed the film, which starred Urmila Matondkar and Saif Ali Khan, but he also wrote the screenplay. The plot of Ek Hasina Thi centres on Sarika (Urmila Matondkar), a lady who seeks vengeance against those responsible for the devastation of her life, especially Karan (Saif Ali Khan). Kavita Kaushik, Aditya Srivastava, and Seema Biswas all had prominent parts in the film.
Following an absence of three years, Sriram returned to the thriller genre in 2007 with Johnny Gaddaar, starring Neil Nitin Mukesh with Dharmendra, Zakir Hussain, Rimi Sen, Vinay Pathak, and Ashwini Kalsekar. The movie surprised everyone by becoming a critical and commercial success. Unnam, a Malayalam version, and Kamina, a Telugu version, are both adaptations. In addition to Mukesh’s nominations for Stardust Superstar of Tomorrow Male and Star Screen Award for Most Promising Newcomer Male, the film won the Filmfare Award for Best Sound Design and the Star Guild Award for Best Actor in a Negative Role for Neil Nitin Mukesh.
The next year, in 2012, Sriram made his directorial debut with Agent Vinod, which starred Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor alongside Prem Chopra, Adil Hussain, Ravi Kishan, and Ram Kapoor. The film follows an agent as he embarks on a covert mission to investigate the death of a colleague but is shocked to uncover a massive conspiracy. The film Agent Vinod was highly anticipated due to its catchy soundtrack, but it was ultimately deemed a critical and commercial failure.
In 2016, the helmers released the film Among his many critically acclaimed works, Badlapur stands out as a career high point. Huma Qureshi, Yami Gautam, Vinay Pathak, Divya Dutta, and Radhika Apte appeared alongside Varun Dhawan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in this action thriller. The film did very well at the box office and was praised by critics for its story about a man seeking revenge for the death of his family. Not only did reviewers give the picture great marks, but they also singled out the film’s excellent storytelling and stellar performances. The film was nominated for Best Film at the 61st Filmfare Awards and a total of 15 Stardust Awards. Shor Se Shuruaat is a collection of seven short films directed by Sriram and released in 2016.
