Urvashi Career
Urvashi’s first acting part was in the Malayalam children’s film Vidarunna Mottukal, when she was just 8 years old (1977). Her breakthrough performance as a leading lady came in the 1984 film Ethirppukal, in which she co-starred with Mammootty. Strong performances in early films like Ente Ammu, Ninte Thulasi, Avarude Chakki (1985), Nirakkoottu (1985), Yuvajanotsavam (1986), Sukhamo Devi (1986), and Desatanakkili Karayarilla (1986) solidified Urvashi’s reputation as one of the most original and promising young actresses of the generation, not just in Malayalam but among other film industries in South India.
She made appearances in almost sixty Malayalam films, nearly forty Tamil films, and roughly twenty Kannada and Telugu films between 1980 and 1990. Films like Malootty (1992), Aham (1992), Venkalam (1993), Sthreedhanam (1993), Mithunam (1993), Spadikam (1995), and Kazhakam (1996) include some of Urvashi’s finest acting work to date (1996). By the turn of the millennium, Urvashi had primarily acted in supporting roles, such as in the films Panchathantiram (2002), Rama Shama Bhama (2005), and Intlo Srimathi Veedhilo Kumari (2009).
In the family drama Achuvinte Amma by Sathyan Anthikkad, she made her long-awaited comeback to Malayalam, telling the narrative of the special relationship between a mother and daughter who are both deeply loved and fiercely protected. When it originally premiered, the film was hailed by critics and audiences alike, and it went on to become a box office smash, with Urvashi receiving the inaugural National Film Award (for Best Supporting Actress) for her role in the film. Alongside Jayaram, she had a breakout role in the comedy-drama Madhuchandralekha the following year, which was a commercial success despite receiving mixed reviews. Urvashi set a new record by winning the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actress for the fifth time thanks to her performance in the film.
