YG Mahendran Early Life

On January 9, 1950, Y. G. Mahendran was born to parents named Yecha Gunja Parthasarathy and Rajalakshmi. In 1952, Y.G.P. established the United Amateur Artists (UAA), one of the earliest theatre groups in Madras city. One of the most prominent playwrights of his time, he rose to prominence after the success of his theatrical company. The Padma Seshadri Group of Schools was started by Mahendra’s mom, Mrs. Rajalakshmi (commonly known as Mrs. Y.G.P.). Although it began as a social service for the members of the Nungambakkam Recreation Club in a small thatched shed on the terrace of the Y.G.P. home in 1959, the school has since grown to become one of the greatest in India, attracting students from all over the country.

Mahendra was up in a theatrical family, so he’s always had a thing for the theatre. When he was in school plays, he was often cast as the comic relief and received praise for his performances. After graduating from Don Bosco Egmore, he attended A.C.College of Technology, the University of Madras in Guindy, and earned an MBA. He majored in chemical engineering. His potential as a movie star was predicted even back in his college days. When he was still a teenager, he started performing with his father’s theatre group, the United Amateur Artists (UAA). That provided him the breather he needed. His early plays were seen by tens of thousands of people. One of the most well-known brands in town was Mahendra’s. At some point he had to decide between performing and pursuing a career in other fields, and he picked acting.

The grandson of the late actress Savithri is married to Y.G. Mahendran’s daughter.

YG Mahendran Career

Veteran filmmaker K. Balachander chose Mahendra to star in his 1971 film Navagraham. The movie made about what would be considered a “normal” amount at the box office. They found out that Mahendra’s hilarious quality was his nasal accent. In the 1960s and 1970s, he acted in a wider variety of films than Cho Ramaswamy did, particularly as a bumbling cousin who is always getting himself into trouble.

Over the course of his four-decade career, Mahendra has appeared in over two hundred films. In addition to starring opposite his brother Rajinikanth, he has also appeared in films alongside Sivaji Ganesan, Jaishankar, Kamal Haasan, and others. The films Pokkiri Raja, Paayum Puli, Shri Raghavendra, and Veera, and Apoorva Raagangal, Neeya, Guru, etc., in which he co-starred with Rajinikanth are among his most notable collaborations.
