Gayathrie Shankar Early Life
Gayathrie was born in Bangalore, Karnataka to parents of Tamil descent. The Trichy native served as an officer in the armed forces. Her family had military ties on both sides, since her father served in the Indian Air Force. Then he went to work for a bank. Her parents are both bankers, and that’s not a lie. She is a licenced hypnotherapist and has a background in psychology. Her rise to Hollywood stardom reads like a page from a fairy tale.
First offered a role in N. Krishna’s film Yean Ippadi Mayakkinai while she was a senior in high school, she turned it down. She got the part by complete and utter chance. She was discovered while she was bowling with her pals, and after passing a screen test a few days later, she was offered the starring role. Legal concerns prevented the film’s release even though the soundtrack was made available. She returned to school to finish up, but she was constantly being approached with new job opportunities.

The psychological thriller 18 Vayasu was her first film, but it was her performance opposite Vijay Sethupathi in Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom that garnered her critical acclaim. She had lead roles in both Ponmaalai Pozhudhu and Mathapoo in 2013. Her second film appearance was alongside Inigo Prabhakaran in the 1980s collegiate romance Rummy. Ula, a film with a large cast, was retitled Chithiram Pesuthuadi 2 and released this year.
Radhika Apte, Priya Banerjee, Vidharth, and Dwayne Bravo appeared in the film, which was directed by Rajan Madhav (of Muran fame). Ranjit Jeyakodi’s 2017 film Puriyatha Puthir stars Vijay Sethupathi and was directed by Jeyakodi. Dark comedy Oru Nalla Naal Paathu Solren starred Vijay Sethupathi, Gautham Karthik, and Niharika Konidela and was directed by Arumugakumar, a filmmaker making his first feature film.
